Third circular: September 2008

ICSTLL-41 is fast approaching.  Here’s some more information which I hope will be useful.

Food and drink
The conference banquet on Friday evening (19th September) will cost £25 per person.  Please indicate by return if you plan to attend so we can make arrangements.  You will be required to pay for the bandquet in cash when you arrive at the conference.  There will be a variety of dishes, including vegetarian.

It will be possible for us to socialise informally on Wednesday 17th and/or Thursday 18th.

Conference Programme
The conference programme is now up on the conference website, though still subject to minor changes. Please check information relevant to you and let me know of any pressing problems.

The skeleton schedule is as follows:
Checking in / registration: Wednesday 17th September 11:00am in the Brunei Gallery
Wednesday 17th September: 11.00am – 5.40pm Pre-conference workshop: Mediaeval Tibeto-Burman Languages Symposium (informal socialising in the evening)
Thursday 18th September: 9.00am – 6.00pm Main conference panels (informal socialising in the evening)
Friday 19th September: 9.00 – 6.00pm Main conference panels
Friday 19th September: 7.00 – 9.00pm Conference Banquet
Saturday 20th September: 9.20am – 6.00pm Main conference panels
Sunday 21st September: 9.40am – 2.00pm Main conference panels

Presentations
The timetabled slot for each paper is 20 minutes, including time for questions and the time taken to change over between speakers.  Please prepare your presentations accordingly.  Overruns will not be tolerated!
Handouts:  bring with you sufficient copies of any printed handouts.  There are copying facilities available within walking distance of SOAS.
Powerpoint:  if at all possible, we strongly encourage you to e-mail a copy of your powerpoint presentation to icstll41@soas.ac.uk, either now or at least a day before you give your presentation. We can try to solve any problems beforehand and have your presentation ready to roll on the day.  It may be possible to attach your laptop to the projector, but there is always a risk of compatibility problems. (Remember the UK has strange plugs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BS1363)

Location
The conference will take place in the Brunei Gallery at the SOAS Russell Sq campus.  The Brunei Gallery is opposite the main SOAS which houses the library (to which conference participants will have access during the conference).

Maps are available at http://www.soas.ac.uk/visitors/location/maps/campus-maps.php

The nearest underground stations are Russell Sq and Goodge St.  There are others nearby, and a wealth of buses.  Information about travel in London is readily available from many sources.  See in particular http://www.tfl.gov.uk/.   If you have any urgent questions, we can try to help.  One tip: if you will be making more than two or three trips using London Transport buses and the London Underground during your time in London, it’s cheaper to buy an Oyster Card.

That’s all for now.  Please let us know if you’re planning to attend the banquet.
